Responsibilities of a SOAR Liaison Representative

Just exactly what should you, as a Liaison Committee member, aspire to accomplish to be of maximum service to your school and to the artist-in-residence endeavor?  Here are some suggestions:

check1.gif (1353 bytes)Plan to attend the two annual meetings for Liaison representatives  - scheduled for early October and early May.  If you cannot attend, make sure to send someone in your place.

check1.gif (1353 bytes)Try to form a SOAR committee in your school.  We have asked principals to submit the names of three teachers and three parents in each school who would like to serve on such a committee.  Ask your principal who has been chosen and, if no action has been taken, ask for recommendations.  With such a committee, you can share responsibility, undertake long-range planning, and generate new ideas for residencies.

check1.gif (1353 bytes)Promote awareness in your school.  For example, each fall put a reminder in the weekly bulletin of application deadlines.  During a given residency, make sure teachers and supportive staff wear SOAR buttons.  (Call or email Jan Heller in the Superintendent's office for a new supply if needed.)  Show the SOAR video to new staff (two different videos available, one from 1995, the other from 1999).  (Your principal should have a copy.  If not, call Gladys Veidemanis at 235-6106 for a copy.)  Create a bulletin board of photographs and newspaper publicity of a residency at your school.  Be imaginative!

check1.gif (1353 bytes)Promote attendance at the annual April Benefit Concert - and not only in years when your school's musical groups are performing.   This concert is a major source of funding for us each year and a very wonderful event, featuring more than four hundred students and a guest alumni artist performing alone and with students.  We could also use volunteers to help with general publicity and ticket sales.

check1.gif (1353 bytes)Volunteer to make a presentation at a Liaison Meeting about a particularly successful residency at your school.

check1.gif (1353 bytes)Attempt to sponsor at least one residency each school year that will enhance the school's curriculum and district goals.

check1.gif (1353 bytes)Offer to assist fellow teachers and departments in the preparation and submission of program proposals.  Make sure applications are delivered by the following dates:  August 1; November 1; January 10; March 1.

check1.gif (1353 bytes)Strive for diversity in the choice of residencies.   Spread them around!  Also, emulate the efforts of schools working with other schools in their "pod" on a common residency.  (Joint or group applications carry a lot of weight!)
